Two days into the brand new NHL season, and there’s already so much to talk about. Let’s take a look at some of last night’s headlines.
Last night’s results
Winnipeg Jets 6-2 BOSTON BRUINS
Ottawa Senators 3-1 BUFFALO SABRES
Philahelphia Flyers 2-3 TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING
Edmonton Oilers 1-3 ST LOUIS BLUES
Carolina Hurricanes 1-2 NASHVILLE PREDATORS
Pittsburgh Penguins 0-3 DALLAS STARS
Minnesota Wild 5-4 COLORADO AVALANCE
Last night’s biggest headlines
– Wild’ forward Zach Parise scores a hat trick in his teams 5-4 comeback win over the Colorado Avalanche. Avs led the game 4-1 during the second period.
– Both Connor McDavid (1st overall, 2015) and Jack Eichel (Second overall, 2015) made their NHL debuts last night. Despite both losing (Oilers lost 3-1 to Blues, Sabres also lost 3-1) they portrayed why they were the top two picks in this years draft. McDavid put his speed and skill on display with a couple of great scoring chances. Eichel led the way with his first NHL goal in the third period against the Sens.
– Dallas Stars goaltender Antti Niemi put on a clinic in a 3-0 win over Pittsburgh, stopping a total of 37 shots in the Stars shutout win.
Niemi’s shutout makes him second in the NHL in total shutouts since 2009.
– The Flyers and Lighting participated in the NHL’s first regular season 3-on-3 overtime. OT was ended when Bolts D man Jason Garrison netted the winner at 2:17 of the overtime period, scoring his second of the game. More 3-on-3 hockey, please.
– Many other players making their NHL debuts made an impact; Jets forward Nicholas Petan scored his first career NHL goal. Blues forward Bobby Fabbri also netted on his NHL debut.
Other notable highlights
– Wild D man Ryan Suter grabbed his 300th NHL assist.
– Pen’s forward David Perron played in his 500th career NHL game.
– Nikolaj Ehlers became just the 10th Danish-born skater to play in the National Hockey League.
